I'm your host.
I'm thrilled to talk to you today about something that really excites me, really. When I think about before [00:02:00] having a business and now having a business and being a mom who wanted to do something that was more conducive with the schedule of raising kids. And of course, thinking about how amazing it is that our world offers us this connection through the internet.
And yeah, I'm excited for some of you out there who might feel like you want something on the side or want to know you know, what it might take to having some, some success in that area of having an online business then hopefully today's podcast will give you some insight. I get the ideas for my podcast episodes straight from working with my clients and getting some emails from you all reaching out, telling me what it is you want, or just when I'm coaching, whether it's a one on one client or my group in, when I see a theme, it says, Hey, you know, maybe I should take a moment to focus on this topic for a minute.
So as a life coach, I coach clients on these particular areas. I coach on [00:03:00] relationships. I coach on your emotional wellness. I coach on time. I coach on money. I coach on physical health, and that is something that I'm going to actually be focusing a little bit more on here of late, because that's what's going on in my life right now.
And then I coach on spiritual well being, and, career/business/vocation. And so today falls into when I'm coaching on business. So I want to give a shout out. First of all, I'm going to just name names who comes top of mind. My clients, Esmeralda and Jennifer, we are both working on what is going on in their life right now.
Which many would look and say is pretty busy, including having jobs outside the home, but they're wanting to transition to having something a little bit more like that will help them bring them to what they believe will feel more balanced in their life. They have this [00:04:00] passion inside to be able to create something online.
And so this today episode is going to be for them as a reminder. And then for any of you who are looking or interested in having a business and like a side job from home. So I'm going to dive in with the personal experience that I have with my job. What I would define as building a successful business from home as a busy mom myself, I know many of you have thought about starting something on your own.
I mean, whether it's a full business or what most of us in society call a side hustle, it doesn't matter. Right. Maybe it's even like just a, in your mind, a creative project that would be something you're good at. Sounds like fun would give you you know, again, that creative outlet and would generate some extra income.
So over the years. I've built my own coaching [00:05:00] business and again, like I mentioned, having several clients kind of ask about what it takes to create something similar. That's what's bringing me here today. And so if you're passionate about a certain skill or interest and feel it could become more and you are wanting to know what, what I think or what I believe every mom needs to have to build a successful business from home.
I'm going to share with you my top five things. I'm also going to preface that I am naming these as essential and I'm talking as if this is what I believe. Like I personally believe if you're just taking from my experience and want to borrow my thoughts that I believe that you actually need these things.
To create that successful home business, are there going to be exceptions to those that people who don't really need these, and it's still a success for them for sure. But again, like this is my way of translating my [00:06:00] experience and you can take some of it, take all of it and then distill for yourself.
Whether you believe, and sometimes we just have to start doing it and learn on our own, and this is what I've learned are the five essential steps to running a successful business, starting a successful business as a busy mom from home, and the first one is to find a niche, to choose a niche, to pick a niche.
And this means to think about who it is specifically you want to be on the other end, or who you believe that whatever your service or product is, that these are the people I want to reach and connect to. Specifically, this doesn't mean you have to come up with some like never seen before idea. Your niche is simply the area [00:07:00] you're going to focus on, whether, and in this place, this is where you can add value based on your own experiences, skills, or passions, right?
It's like finding your own unique corner of the internet where you can shine. So, for example, let's say you're passionate about health and fitness, okay? Then your niche could be guiding other moms in postpartum workouts. So my niche I chose to pick overwhelmed moms. Catholic moms, okay? Because that is what I was.
And that is what I overcame. And so I specifically picked not just anyone who's overwhelmed, right? So I picked a particular gender. I picked someone who had a certain role, a mother, and then I went even deeper to a faith based level [00:08:00] of calling out this certain gender type of person who would resonate with what I my skill, my service is to help, right?
Maybe you're a whiz with organizing, right? This is one I contemplated. I think that I'm a whiz with organizing, and I do help people organize. I organize their mind first. And then, yes, inside my coaching program, you do get help with actual physical organizing, too, if that's something that you want to, to hurdle.
But if that's something you're good at, maybe you want to hone in on something like that, right? It might be that you want to help families create clutter free homes. And then I would say you want to even get it like, a little bit more specific than that. Who exactly do you want to help empty nester moms who finally, when the kids are out of the house, you want to then circle back and help them get their house and things clutter free or organize their kids [00:09:00] things so that they can, their adult children, give them away.
With the example of my client right now, she is honing in on helping people who are have curly hair, be able to handle and take care of and style the way that they would want to. But look, that is some, that is a specific niche is those with curly hair. So you want, my point is to be specific.
So that the right people for whatever business that you want, the ones who really need what you are offering so that they can find you so that you can so that when they see what you offer, they will either say, yes, that's me. I want that. Or they'll say, no, that is not me. That's not what I want. And then they'll move on.
And that's what you really want. So finding a niche, when you're thinking about your business [00:10:00] and really defining the specific group of people to offer your service and help to is one of my essential pieces of advice. If you are wanting to have a business from home as a busy mom, you know, think about what you're naturally good at or what friends and family already ask you for advice on. And that's often a great hint at starting that brainstorming process of your niche.
Okay. The second essential step to running a successful business. at home as a busy mom is you will need traffic. Okay. And what traffic is, is you simply need a flow of people who were able to come across your kind of content, your service, your product within your business without people seeing what you offer.
Without you announcing, without you telling, without you making it visible, without [00:11:00] marketing, advertising to the world that this is your business and you're starting it, then other people are going to never know. And so we need to generate traffic. It's essential. Right? So even the best idea can stall if nobody knows about it or if nobody's seeing it. So let's talk about ways you can get your eyeballs on your business.
For moms, this might mean you start with a social media platform like Instagram or Facebook or even Pinterest or Etsy, right? Depending on where your audience hangs out, it might be YouTube. You might deliver it versus via videos. And let, let's say you're sharing parenting tips. For example, you might post on Instagram and do Reels and images and posts and have your profile so that people can find you.
If you're aiming for DIY like home projects I know Pinterest is [00:12:00] a perfect place to build traffic. I myself, I run ads on Facebook and there isn't one right way, there isn't one best way. You take a little bit of time, decide, how do I want to spend my time marketing, talking about what I do and where do I think my people are hanging out?
Where do I think the people who I think would be interested in my products, where would they be looking for me? Right. And so that's what you want to answer. And then you want to just pick, you know, here on the podcast, I totally like want you moms to build the skill of making really strong, quick decisions.
And this is one of them. Your brain's going to tell you, you don't know which one is the best, but I just want you to go inside, close your eyes and say, how do I want to make it known that I'm starting this business? I mean, you [00:13:00] literally could go that you want to talk to your friends. You want to make an announcement to your family.
You want them, people to ask if they know anyone else. It might mean you want to go door to door. It might mean you want to put a message in your church bulletin. I'm not sure, but you just want to pick something and then the key to generating traffic is to be consistent, right? Because it takes time to get the word out.
It means sharing regularly so people get familiar with what you offer. And if you're just starting, I want you to think of it as planting seeds. You might not see results immediately, but with patience, you will start to see your responses in your community grow.
In fact, I'm just going to inject there now that some of my most helpful advice that I was given that I want to translate over to you today is to see building a [00:14:00] business as a whole growing a garden. Okay. In the beginning, you are going to have to do a lot of work, right? To prepare the soil. And right there, I see like to prepare your mind, right? For what a business is going to probably do to your mind and all the questions it's going to bring and the obstacles it's going to bring up about how you're not capable or it's too hard or you don't know how to do that tech stuff.
I went through the, all of this myself, but we want to till and prepare the soil, and then you're going to plant the seeds, right? Then you're going to start to talk about it and show up in those wherever you've decided to generate traffic. And in so what you're going to know is that you're immediately not going to have this big, wonderful harvest.
Well, some of you might, it does happen. But what you're going to see is that it then takes watering and fertilizing and time and the seasons [00:15:00] changing and loving on the, like yourself. And again, we're staying with the garden and then you will see little sprouts, but even then it's not going to be a chance to like, you know, pluck them all and make us beautiful bouquet yet.
If you're growing flowers in your garden, I just want you to see that. Building a business is like building a garden and it will need those seeds planted. And that's what I am just kind of painting the picture is what this step two is, which is generating traffic. Okay.
Step three is for you to create valuable content. Okay. This is what's next and this is what's essential is it that you are going to share what is your knowledge base about it when you share your product and service and talk about it and how you can help and what actually your offer is [00:16:00] and then you are the way I started my content is by writing blogs, right?
And then again, on, so I picked social, I would do posts. I would share certain quotes. I would share certain how to's. And then eventually this podcast came about, and this is a way I share my content and knowledge about coaching and the tools and the strategies I chose my content delivery as a podcast.
Okay, and what this does is this allows me to share my knowledge But you on the other end, this is when we build trust because I'm providing you value for free So before people even consider paying for me many times they've come back and heard it again and again and again And so if you're wanting to start your own business know that you will want to be like delivering really good, high value [00:17:00] content on these areas of where you've decided to drive traffic to you.
For many moms, this content creation might feel really intimidating. It was for me too, right? I didn't know like how to write emails and consistently like put out podcasts that were helpful. I just had to. Start somewhere, be simple, remove the perfectionism, have lots of grace for myself to just try several things, to see what hits, what doesn't make it.
And then sometimes I want you to know that it was simply as just sharing what I was doing with people that I met in different ways, whether I met them online or I met them online. In my everyday life, I just shared. And so again, content can look like blog posts, social media updates, YouTube videos, like this [00:18:00] podcast, if that feels like it's a fit for you.
But for example, if your niche is meal planning for busy families. You might then create a weekly blog post with simple recipes and grocery lists. Or if you're passionate about kids crafts, you could post weekly YouTube videos with easy project ideas. The goal is to create content that draws your audience in, right?
Think about what draws you in when you are looking at either social media or advertisements or groups where someone's being helpful, or where do you go when you, there's something you found is like a void or you don't have in your life and then you want it. Where do you go, right? Are you someone who goes to Pinterest?
Are you someone who goes to Etsy? Are you someone who goes there to find things? Well then that would make it probably a good fit for you and to see what resonates and you could just try there as examples [00:19:00] to to try and jump off of yourself with your own product or service. The goal is really just to create content that draws that audience in that drives that traffic up and it helps them see the value that you bring.
So just think of your content is little like samples of what's working with you would be like. I know that my own coach, she uses the sample of like when you go to the ice cream shop or the, You know, when you, when you want to try a flavor, you ask for a sample. You just want to create content where you're giving little samples about you and your, your mission and the value and what you can do to help and what you're bringing.
Or if it's a product, like all about like what's a little benefit or how is it going to change their life for the better or whatever like that is like a little sample and then they'll be drawn in to want more. Okay.
Step four. Is to believe in yourself and the goals. So we have this idea of [00:20:00] what the garden could be like. That's what, when I started my business, I actually pictured like the self, myself of today, the one that has clients, the one that is coaching a lot, the one that has books and podcasts and courses available, like a building a community, right? One that has lots of testimonials of moms whose lives have changed, right?
So I pictured the garden that it is now. And I had a lot of obstacles in my mind that came up. I had lacked some skills, especially on the tech side. Let's just go there, right? But one of the biggest ingredients to success. And I know I struggled with it, and I know many moms will struggle with it, is that self belief.
You have to believe in what you're doing, and you have to trust that you're capable of reaching your goals, even when the going gets tough, because it will. It will be frustrating. It will be frustrating to see some negative comments. It will be [00:21:00] frustrating for people to say, No, I don't want that again and again.
It's easy to think, Who am I to start a business? Or, I'm just a mom. What do I have to offer? But remember, what you bring to the table is unique. And no one else can share it the way you can. Even if what you pick and what you want to do, you think a million other people are out there doing it. It's not you.
You have a special way. There are some people who they will want you in your way of your product or service and the way you deliver it. So believing in yourself and setting specific goals for your life, for your stage of motherhood, for your family circumstances, right, that's what you want to do, keeping yourself focused and driven and.
When it comes to entrepreneurship, you're going to want to give yourself lots of self compassion and grace and time. So for example, if your goal is to grow a small online community of other moms and you say, I want to do it within three [00:22:00] months and you write it down and you visualize it and you keep showing up, that is you planting seeds.
That's you starting your garden. That's you making decisions and moving forward. That's you taking action and confidence will build over time. And just as you are supporting others, it's also important for you to support yourself with the same kind of encouragement, which means learning to believe in yourself and build in that belief and, and the possibilities for your business and idea and capabilities along the way.
Which directly brings me to my final essential step, because in order to get that belief, It might be something that you need someone outside of you to help you with. So my last, I believe is an essential step if you take on creating and building a successful business as a busy mom from home, I believe an essential step is to [00:23:00] find a coach or mentor to guide you through the obstacles because there will be some, there'll be quite a few. I would just say this is the big one because I recommend I would not have the success I have today if I hadn't regularly invested in myself to help keep my mind managed and in a good place and in strong beliefs and when the going got tough and things were rough, then you had somebody to help you remind you of your why to keep Just to breathe some possibility into you and to keep you going.
And it's so worth it. Definitely at the beginning is when all of those, I'm going to quit. This isn't working. This is too hard. All came in. And if I hadn't had a coach or a mentor who had gone before me and had known this stuff and helped me to not let me hit that wall again and again and again, I would not [00:24:00] be where I am today.
Starting a business. It just comes with a whole new set. Of challenges, which I don't want to say that and scare you away because again, this it's a great container to help you build and grow, which were you're going to be met with challenges in life anyway, and you are going to want to put all your time and energy into new goals because that's just how we are made up as a human.
I'm all for welcoming these type of challenges. I am a different person from taking on this. Like what the skills that I have learned I never would have imagined like. What I'm not scared of now that seemed like totally foreign in a different language and ancient, like just so hard for me to grasp, I'm actually like, I get it now.
Right? And so having someone there to help guide you, answer questions, keep you accountable, it can make all the difference, right? For I know that I, as a coach, I help you get clarity on [00:25:00] your goals. You can create a plan. You sometimes ask for, and I give my own experience and suggestions, and I actually help you learn from the mistakes I've made so you don't have to do them again.
That is why we do look to those who have created something that we want to create ourselves and specially have you work through any doubts or roadblocks that come up along the way. My growth was so much faster and smoother with a coach to help me see my blind spots and I've been honored to do the same for my own clients.
So, if you're serious about building something meaningful, I would definitely recommend not to go it alone. Find someone who understands your goals and can help you get there faster and with more ease. Okay? So there you have it. The five essentials for building a successful business [00:26:00] as a busy mom. Let's recap.
Okay. You need a, a niche. You need a way to build traffic. You need consistent, valuable content. You need belief in yourself and your goals. And lastly, it's essential for a coach or a mentor to help you out along the way, if you're considering starting a business, a side hustle, or even just exploring the possibilities.
Just even if you have this idea in your heart and you're, you're not sure, and you want to explore because you want to get to the place where you feel more decisive about it. And it may be that it gets to lead you to know this is not the time or no, I don't want to. That's also amazing.
